A common question I get asked is "Does hiring a lawyer mean my case will end up in a lawsuit or court trial?" The short answer is "no," but this deserves further explanation.
Not every case results in a lawsuit filed in court, and not every lawsuit filed results in a court trial.
A lawyer must follow the client's legal goals such as whether to settle or file a lawsuit in court. The lawyer's job is to provide the client with their legal advice and expertise. That includes things like understanding how the legal system works and the pros and cons of filing a lawsuit or settling to help the client decide whether settlement or a lawsuit is best for their needs. Ultimately, the decision to settle or file a lawsuit is the client's.
