# It's Now Illegal in Colorado to Park, Stand, or Stop a Vehicle in a Bike Lane.

Since August 12, 2026, Colorado law bans stopping or parking in bike lanes statewide. What HB26-1237 changed, the fine, and what it means if a blocked lane caused your crash.

As of August 12, 2026, it's illegal to stop, stand, or park a vehicle in a designated bike lane anywhere in Colorado. (HB26-1237, C.R.S. § 42-4-1204(1)(j.5).)

**What Changed**

Before this law, blocking a bike lane was mostly a local matter — some cities banned it, many didn't. Now it's a statewide Class B traffic infraction, punishable by a fine of up to $100. The only exceptions: avoiding a conflict with other traffic, or following an officer's or traffic control device's direction.

**Why It Matters for Your Case**

If a driver stops, parks, or stands their vehicle in the bike lane and cause you to crash or force you into traffic and you were hit, that driver wasn't just being rude — they were violating a specific statute. That violation is powerful evidence of fault. Lawyers call it negligence per se: breaking a safety law is itself evidence of negligence.

It's still not a slam dunk. Comparative fault could still apply even with the driver of a vehicle violating the ban on parking, stopping, or standing with their vehicle in a bike lane. A cyclist is not relieved of their duty to ride reasonably and watch where they are riding. The facts will matter so it's smart to work with a lawyer to help navigate even a case that involves vehicle that violates HB26-1237/CRS § 42-4-1204(1)(j.5).

**What's Next: Camera Enforcement?**

Denver is now considering automated cameras to ticket bike-lane blockers — the proposal goes before a City Council committee October 7, with enforcement projected for early 2027. The law has teeth; cameras would give it a bite.

One more thing HB26-1237 did: it updated Colorado statutes to say "crash" instead of "accident." A small language change with a big message — crashes aren't accidents. Someone made a choice to drive unreasonably or recklessly by speeding, running a red light, driving distracted, or drinking and driving, etc. Someone made a choice. Someone is responsible.
